This paper provides a brief overview of the present status and problems of Library and Infor- mation Science (LIS) education in Indian universities with an emphasis on the need for its internal qual- ity assurance and accreditation by an external agency. The University Grants Commission's (UGC) ef- forts for the improvement of quality of LIS education have also been highlighted. A set of objective in- dicators has been developed on the basis of an understanding of the global developments in the activities and services of libraries and information centers, the national environment, the outcome of National As- sessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the observations and recommendations arising from different national level seminars and workshops to facilitate the assessment and accreditation of LIS education.
