Static and dynamic measurements in small induction motors using a fiber Bragg grating interrogation unit

This paper describes the implementation of an interrogation system using optical fiber sensors, specifically fiber Bragg gratings, to be used in the evaluation of the thermal performance of an induction motor. It is shown that the system can also operate as a strain monitoring system which suggests that it can equivalently be used to measure strain inside the motor. The main component in the system is an optical integrated device, manufactured by Santec (OWL-10-WT). It operates as a transducer of optical signals. The interrogation principle is based on an intensity-based signal associated with the measurand. The interrogation unit also shows a low cost if compared to other similar systems.
