PRODUCTION AND PROPERTIES OF HIGH-STRENGTH NICKEL-ALLOY STEEL PLATES FOR LOW TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS

Liquefied natural gas is usually transported by specially equipped ships and stored in LNG terminals. The construction of vessels and tanks for LNG/LEG transportation purposes leads to a demand for steels with specified low temperature properties. This article gives an overview on the production, properties and processing behaviour of 5% and 9%-nickel-alloyed high-strength steels for low temperature applications produced by ThyssenKrupp. Further an insight into industrial production experience and an illustration of the application of nickel steel plates in projects around the world is given.
