PHYSICAL MODELLING OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS : analysis-synthesis by means of state space representations

State space representations of dynamical systems are currently used in control system theory. This paper aims at examining the advantages given by this formalism in the field of physical modelling of musical instruments, in comparison with other techniques. First, a temptative overview of the different approaches in the modelling of musical instruments is made, then the state space formalism is briefly presented and its advantages are dicussed; a preliminary example of application is finally described.
