Time-frequency domain delay estimation algorithm for multipath and interference mitigation in UWB positioning systems

This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for mitigating problems due to multipath and interference, faced during signal time of arrival estimation in UWB positioning systems. The algorithm first uses time and frequency domain processing to mitigate the effects of interference and noise. It then alleviates the multipath effect via a first arriving pulse detection scheme. The algorithm is verified with a prototype system in a real indoor environment. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the system performance under low SNR/SIR conditions as well as in the presence of strong multipath and narrow band interference signals.
