CDMA Performance in Tactical Applications

Abstract Dean, R. A., CDMA Performance in Tactical Applications, Digital Signal Processing 12 (2002) 242–251 This paper develops some advantages of IS95-based code division multiple access (CDMA) for military tactical applications by comparing the power efficiency of CDMA to current tactical radios which employ digital FM (DFM) technology. A definition of power efficiency is developed along with a simple model for comparing CDMA with DFM. A power efficiency performance differential is then developed based on modulation, multipath, and power control features. This performance differential is then adapted to show performance gains for intercept, detection, and geolocation. Intercept range is reduced by a factor of 2–6, and detection and geolocation range are reduced by a factor of 10–30 for the examples selected.
