Collision detection technology based on capsule model in virtual maintenance

Virtual reality technology provides a new approach for maintenance concurrent design, making it available at equipment design stage. Collision detection technology of virtual maintenance can judge the collision between virtual humans and virtual substances, and offer collision location, collision depth and other information. Currently, the common collision detection algorithms are surrounding box method and space partition method, both of which have their own disadvantages in terms of process simplicity and real-time results, so they are not fully applicable to the virtual maintenance system. This paper proposes the virtual maintenance collision detection technology based on capsule model to solve the above-mentioned issues. Virtual human models and virtual prototypes are simplified to corresponding capsule models, which are composed of appropriate feature points. In consideration of maintenance tasks, virtual human maintenance position and path, collision detection between virtual humans and virtual prototypes is calculated and accomplished. This real-time method greatly decreases the detection range and analysis content, optimizes the collision detection algorithm and improves analysis efficiency.
