Observations on the Spread of Pleuropneumonia-Like Organisms of Chickens.

Observations were made on the spread of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) of chickens on a poultry farm known to be infected with this agent. This study was based on the PPLO hemagglutination-inhibition diagnostic test of Fahey and Crawley (1954). It was observed that in one pen of 400 adult chickens, the PPLO spread rapidly by direct contact and was dust borne over a short distance. When the serological test showed that 90% or more of the chickens were exhibiting PPLO-HI antibodies, active excretion of the organism ceased. Results also indicated that the PPLO was unable to survive in the dust and litter of the premises. The absence of spread of PPLO from serologically positive chickens and the non survival of the organism in the litter, permitted a number of pens of chickens to remain PPLO-HI negative for a period of 15 months in the environment studied.
