LIMITING THE OLDER DRIVERS' RIGHT TO DRIVE. A FATAL TRAFFIC SAFETY MEASURE

Sweden has a very liberal licensing legislation involving no age-related control. In contrast,in Finland, drivers who wish to keep their driving licences have to go through repeated medical controls starting from the age of 45 years. Consequently, a higher proportion of older drivers keep their licences in Sweden than in Finland. In the present study, Swedish and Finnish accident rates for private car drivers and for unprotected road users in different ages were compared in order to evaluate the safety effects of the different licensing policies for older drivers.
