In situ reactions for synthesis of composites, ceramics, and intermetallics : proceedings of a Symposium sponsored by the joint : ASM-MSD/SMD Composites Commitee and MDMD Powder Materials Committee, 124th TMS Annual Meeting, Las Vegas, Nevada, February 12-16, 1995

This symposium was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the 124th TMS Annual Meeting, February 12--16, 1995, and was co-sponsored by SMD and ASM-MSD, ASTM/TMS Composites and the TMS Powder Materials Committees. It was organized in five sessions: (1) Shock and Strain Related Effects, (2) In Situ Synthesis of Composites, (3) Combustion Synthesis and Densification, (4) In Situ Synthesis of Ceramic Systems, and (5) In Situ Synthesis of Intermetallic Systems. The papers presented in each of these sessions represent significant contributions on a wide variety of fundamental and technological aspects and bring together scientists, engineers, and manufacturers, both as speakers and audience. The authors deal with physical based mathematical models, theories, and simulations; mechanisms; thermodynamics; and kinetics of in situ reactions and their applications to the synthesis of composites, ceramics, and intermetallics. During the organization of this symposium, it became evident that while some authors welcomed the publication as limited peer reviewed symposium proceedings, others preferred publication as fully peer reviewed journal papers. Thus, this book contains the full text of approximately one-half of the papers presented at the symposium, as well as abstracts of all papers. It is expected that the full text of the remaining papers will be more » published in Metallurgical Transactions. Thirty two papers have been processed separately for inclusion of the data base. « less
