Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics modelling of methane flow through permeable strata around a longwall face

Abstract The emission of methane and its subsequent migration from source seams into mine workings are an inherent hazard in underground coal mining. Numerical modelling offers a useful tool for the prediction and control of methane emissions in mine workings. An approach based on computational fluid dynamics is described that incorporates laboratory data to simulate the methane-air flow through strata around longwall faces, where permeability is strongly influenced by mining-induced stresses.
