Current and emerging separations technologies in biorefining

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of separations technologies commonly employed in existing biorefineries as well as emerging separations technologies that are well poised to exhibit rapid growth in future biorefineries. Specifically, we focus on membrane-based separations, because they are becoming the separation platform of choice. In addition, we provide examples where electrochemically-driven processes could significantly reduce energy consumption during separations. We present several examples from our work, defining directions in separations technologies for integrated biorefineries.
