Excess volumes of mixtures of tetrabutyltin with branched and linear alkanes

Excess volumes are reported for 14 systems at 25°C. These are mixtures of a globular alkane-like molecule SnBu4 with 6 linear alkanes, C6, C7, C8, C12, C16, C17 and 3 branched alkanes: 2,2,3-trimethylpentane, 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane and 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane and for 5 mixtures of branched and linear alkanes: br-C12+ C6, C12, C16, br-C16+ C10, C16. Excess volumes were calculated from free volume theories and the experimental heats of mixing. Good agreement is found between the calculated and experimental VE. The contribution to VE of the disordering of the linear alkanes appears to be taken into account adequately by the heat of mixing term. This series of systems shows the relative importance of the three contributions to the VE, of the heat of mixing, difference in free volumes and difference between the pressure reduction parameters, P*.
