Self-focusing of optical beams

The nonlinear index of refraction is responsi· ble for many effects in optical beam propaga· tion including self-focusing. We will review self-focusing and related phenomena and dis cuss physical mechanisms which give rise to the refractive nonlinearity. Optical self-action effects occur when an elec tromagnetic field induces a refractive index change in the medium through which the field propagates. The change in index of refraction then reacts back on the field so as to intluence its propagation characteristics. The principal ef fects;are shown in the Table. Table of Self-Action Effects
