Phasor Measurement Units Performance Assessment During Power System Disturbances Using Real-Time Digital Simulator

Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are used for wide area measurement system (WAMS) applications. The accuracy of these applications depend on the measurement accuracy of PMUs. Synchrophasor measurement requirements for power systems are defined by IEEE standard C37.118.1. The measurement accuracy of PMUs is usually tested using signal generators or standard relay testing equipment and only changes in one parameter at the same time is studied. During power system disturbances PMUs have to measure current and voltage signal that have varying amplitude, phase angle and frequency. This could cause additional measurement errors that is not studied with usual testing methods. The purpose of this paper is to show how different PMU configurations affect the accuracy of PMUs during power system disturbances. Two PMUs from different manufactures are tested using modified IEEE 9 bus power system model that is simulated with Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS).
