An analysis of radiated noise from rolling tire vibration

Abstract It has been recently reported that smooth tires generate noise. This paper investigates smooth tire vibration noise generated by rolling on roads. Because of difficulties in measuring exciting forces, we undertake an operational analysis to examine rolling tire vibration behavior. Rolling tire vibration is measured using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. In addition, we measured sound intensity to investigate the relation between vibration and sound radiation. Rolling tire sound radiation is estimated by applying the results of the operational analysis to the boundary element method, and the results of predicting sound intensity radiation show good agreement with experimented data.
