Theory of piles in swelling and shrinking soils : Conference. Session four. 10F. 19R. PROC. EIGHTH INT. CONF. ON SOIL MECH. FOUND. ENGNG. MOSCOW, V2.2, 1973, P169–176

In this paper, a method of analysing the movement of a pile in swelling soil is presented. The analysis is based on the simplifying assumption that the soil can be treated as an elastic material, but modifications to the analysis are described which allow consideration of such factors as non-homogeneity, slip at the pile-soil interface, and crushing or tensile failure of the pile. A number of idealized theoretical solutions are presented. Comparisons between the predicted characteristics of the behavior of piles in swelling soils show encouraging agreement with the behavior observed in a number of full-scale field tests. /TRRL/
