Power System Decomposition Based on Hierarchical Tree Structure

This paper describes an improved technique for identification of coherent regions. In this technique, the coherent generators are identified using a pattern recognition method called hierarchical clustering technique. This method is based on the derivation of the generators' parameters and measures distances among generators. Through measuring the generators' distances, the hierarchical clustering method identifies the coherent generators in power systems. Generators are grouped in such a way that those with similar behaviors are close with each other in a same group and dissimilar ones are spaced farther apart. Hierarchical cluster analysis reveals data patterns easier than recognizing the distance matrix generators. The proposed method is applied to the 16-generators and NPCC New England test system.
