In this paper, the relationship between the rain pattern and the motion of the tropical cyclones (TC) making landfall on Guangdong is investigated. Analyses include 72 TC cases of landfall on the coast of Guangdong during 1980~2001. Results show that after 66.1 % of the landfalls the TCs tend to accelerate in their forward motion. Especially, when main rainfall appears to the right of the centers (viewing in the direction of motion) 81.8 % of the landfall TCs have a positive 12-hour average acceleration; when main rainfall appears to the left of the centers 78.6 % of them have a negative 12-hour average acceleration. It is suggested that topography and diabatic heating play important roles in the motion of landfall TCs.
