THE ROLE OF INTERLANGUAGE IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Because of its very nature INTERLANGUAGE (IL) has always been an important issue in connection with language acquisition even before the term and its quasi-synonyms were coined. Its highly disputed characteristics and definition have sometimes made it appear in a somewhat 'mysterious' light. After a short discussion of its evolution and some of its theoretical aspects, its practical direct and indirect relevance for FLT including the socio-linguistic phenomenon of international varieties of English (EIL) also the subject language awareness is described.
