Essays on the Viennese Classical Style

collection of self-contained, though related, essays released by the author through 1968. The essays, relating to the larger aspects of classical music, cover twelve subjects, discussing musical developments occurring during the whole of the eighteenth century. The subjects relate to those covered in the more formal and monumental critical edition of the Haydn symphonies. The author says in the foreword that the essays are not meant to be scientific, and with exceptions in only two essays, no footnotes or other proofs are included. They were designed as popular literature, and as such, are easy reading. The premise of each essay, however, is significant, and the author's concise reasoning brings an argument to a conclusion in short order.
