Mechanisms of deterioration in cement-based materials and in lime mortar

The possible deterioration processes in lime mortar and in cement based materials are analyzed in terms of the responses of the constituents of these materials to three common air pollutants (carbon dioxide sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides). The nature of possible chemical reactions between these pollutants and lime or cement are discussed. The factors which may limit the rate of deterioration are appraised. The effects of these reactions on durability are appraised. 17 references.
