Dual optical bus for efficient aggregation and backhauling networks and potential extensions

Packet-optical transport (P-OT) systems and platforms are currently offering a proposed answer to the short term carrier needs in terms of efficient triple play service backhauling and aggregation. This paper deals with the dual optical bus, an additional alternative that features tighter integration between the packet and optical layers. After introducing the optical bus concept and discussing its enabling related mechanisms, we focus on one implementation designed for backhauling and aggregation networks, the dual bus optical ring network (DBORN). Original benchmarking results, with legacy solutions and other alternatives, highlight the winning combination of packet statistical multiplexing, passive optics, and multicast capabilities presented by the dual optical bus. The last part of the paper introduces and discusses potential extensions and challenges relying on the dual optical bus integration in photonic reconfigurable networks including ROADMs. e 2010 Alcatel-Lucent.
