Document image processing: taking the plunge

Because of the lack of space and of the storage problems encountered at various levels of the Research Information Centre (RIC) and other departments of Shell Research S.A., it was decided to investigate what solutions were available on the market. Electronic storage of documents (or document image processing (DIP)) was considered to be the most promising solution to the current problem. A requirements specification was written in order to evaluate what could be done or what would be difficult to realise with a DIP system. Having compared the solutions proposed by different companies, it was finally decided to go for a pilot implementation of Docimage/Taurus.
