CENDEHILL strain rubella vaccine and HPV 77 DE 5 rubella vaccine were administered to adult women in an open field trial to compare vaccine effectiveness in stimulating antibody production and the relative frequencies of associated side reactions. In addition to determinations of antibody response and observations of clinical reactions, the presence of viremia and virus shedding among vaccinees was also studied. Methods Selection of Volunteers and Vaccine Administration. —During the spring of 1968, a field trial of rubella vaccine was carried out in children in Danbury, Conn. 1 Some 1,300 mothers of participating children had been bled at that time, and approximately 10% were subsequently identified as susceptible by the rubella hemagglutination-inhibiting HI test. Of these women, 24 volunteered for the present study. All were pretested for the presence of urinary chorionic gonadotropin by slide agglutination reaction to rule out possible early pregnancy and all agreed to practice a medically
