Chapter 2 – Energy Storage

The extensive consumption of fossil fuel–derived energy has increased concerns over centralized energy distribution and environmental emissions in recent years. The dependency on primary and secondary energies has paved the way for societal development on one hand, but the shortage of energy to supply peaking demand requirements are inexorable on the other. The gap between energy supply and energy demand can be filled through energy storage. The storage of any form of energy is considered valuable because it can be used later when the demand rises. Energy storage largely depends on such factors as the type of energy sources, their availability, and applications. The capacity of energy storage systems is primarily a function of these factors, where swift charging and discharging characteristics exhibited for fluctuating demand conditions decide the operational performance and reliability of storage systems on a long-term basis.
