Numerical simulation of arc motion during interruption process of low-voltage circuit breakers

Mathematic equations describing arc root movement on different geometries of contact surfaces for low-voltage circuit breakers are proposed in this paper. Coupling with a chain-type arc model and considering mechanical movement, magnetic field and electrical transient circuit, an arc interruption numerical model for low-voltage circuit breakers has been developed. Based on this model, the arc motion during interruption process for low-voltage circuit breakers was simulated. The paper also analyzes the arc motion characteristics in different configurations of arc runners.
