RTV silicone-a high tech solution for a dirty insulator problem

The liquid silicone RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) coating has gained considerable popularity since the first field trial in 1973 with an experimental product and the first large-scale application in 1987 with a commercial product. Although few problems have been encountered with the first generation coating, it became apparent with use that certain improvements to the technology were necessary in order to be assured of a longer life. These improvements included: improved adhesion to porcelain, the ability to resist for a longer period of time the development of leakage current and flashover, improved immunity to reversion or de-polymerization, faster spray application, and live-line application of the coating.
