Future of Packaging White Paper

The Sustainable Products and Packaging team at Centre for Design (CfD) partnered with the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC), Helen Lewis Research and Sustainable Business to develop this white paper to support a more strategic and proactive role for industry in packaging sustainability. The white paper considered past, current and future issues within a sustainability framework. The intention was to identify actions that could be taken by AFGC and its stakeholders to go `beyond compliance' with the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) and to address broader waste and sustainability impacts and opportunities related to packaging. The white paper was developed in consultation with many of these stakeholders in a number of stages. This study has been the forebearer of a number of industry research projects, including the CfDs 2013 research with Chep Austrlaia on 'The role of packaging in minimising food waste in the supply chain of the future', and it was also used by the AFGC to help frame policy as it is referenced now in their sustainability commitment which can be found at www.afgc.org.au/sustainability/afgcs-sustainability-commitment.html.
