Placental Transmogrification of the Lung

Developmental cystic anomalies of the lung are often detected at prenatal screening, in the postnatal period, or in early childhood. However, some of the anomalies are detected in later childhood or adulthood. Congenital cystic lung pathologies can be confused with cystic tumors or cavitary infectious diseases; therefore, the understanding of imaging features and pathology is crucial for adequate clinical management. In this article, we report a case of placental transmogrification (PT) in an adult as a rare entity to be considered in the differential diagnosis of lung masses and congenital pulmonary cystic masses in the adult. Imaging findings and histology of PT of the lung in comparison to imaging features of other cystic lung pathologies in the adult will be discussed in this article.
