Remote sounding of atmospheric temperature from satellites. I. Introduction

Atmospheric temperature can be sounded remotely by observing the emission from carbon dioxide in its 15 μm band. The principles of design of suitable instrumentation for such observation are reviewed. An instrument employing a selective chopper enables emission from higher altitudes to be selected than is possible with conventional instruments.
