PREPARATION FOR EVACUATION TESTS OF A CRASHED L1649.

Abstract : Four aircraft evacuation tests were prepared using a previously crashed L1649 aircraft as the test vehicle. Two tests occurred in daylight and two at night. Spacing between rows of seats was varied from 39 inches to 32 inches. A number of items, such as cabin smoke, an external fire siren and sound effects in the cabin were used to add realism to the test. Four 'passengers' pretended to be incapacitated during each evacuation. Motion pictures inside and outside the aircraft and tape recordings of sound inside the cabin were taken during the evacuation. Each test utilized between 44 and 49 passengers and two experienced stewardesses, who responded to questionnaires concerning their experiences and reactions immediately after the evacuation. (Author)
