Human-machine interaction and digital signal processing

Human-machine interaction is getting more attention as more people are confronted with computing systems. The relationship with digital signal processing is old, complex and rich. Ability to provide services based on merging different kinds of signals such as text, graphics, images and speech, is a challenge for digital signal processing specialists and computer scientists. Major improvement in human-machine interaction is badly needed. Two directions of research for understanding and isolating essential ingredients are suggested : clear separation of symmetric from asymmetric parts in human-machine partnership, design of human-machine interfaces adaptable by the user. Better human-machine interaction concerns all scientists.
