After some considerations on data and their use in hospitals the concept Integrated Hospital Information System is described together with its potential advantages. Essential elements in this concept are:
storage of data of various type within a central database, together with their interrelationships,
conversational access to the data at the moment when and the place where users need these,
data should be presented in a shape geared to the needs of the specific user,
the system should check the quality of the data supplied as good as possible,
the system should take care of a part of the coordinating activities in the hospital.
