Abstract Studies on the dynamics and identification of the dynamic model of force-balance accelerometers (FBAs) are based on linear system theory. These methods are feasible in real applications when the dynamic non-linearity of the transducers can be neglected. But this kind of analysis method has certain limitations. In this paper, the identification of a non-linear model of FBAs is discussed. The mechanism of dynamic non-linearity is analysed and then the method of high-order spectrum estimation is proposed. Finally, frequency-domain modelling of the non-linear transfer function of FBAs can be obtained by computing high-order spectra. Experimental results show that the applied method is correct and feasible for estimating the dynamics of FBAs.
