B-1B/MJU-23 FLARE STRIKE TEST PROGRAM

This paper documents a major success of integrated test and evaluation (IT&E) in the Air Force. The B-IB fleet was suffering from a flare strike problem that limited flare training operations. Computational fluid dynamics, requiring sophisticated modeling methods, and carefully designed flight test techniques were used to resolve the problem and restore the fleet to full operational status. This paper also outlines the final recommendations made to the Air Combat Command and examines the lessons learned from this analysis and flight test program.
