This paper presents an approach to widen torque converter clutch lock-up zone to improve fuel efficiency of an AT vehicle by preventing driveline abnormal vibration. Most of all torque converter damper clutches consist of two stages of damper springs. This non-linear characteristic may result in abnormal vibration in driveline when damper clutch stiffness and first stage torque limit (T1) are not appropriately tuned with engine output torque characteristics, and TCU lock-up zone setting. To predict drive train torsional abnormal vibration we carried out simulations for several types of engines and test in vehicles to verify them. The result suggests the design method, which decides T1 that can prevent abnormal vibration in drive train, and improve fuel efficiency, considering engine types, output torque-speed curve, torque map and TCU mapping.
