Up to date no pavement design method has been developed in Korea and the'72AASHTO interim guide and pavement design method have been used. which are developed in USA and Japan. respectively The AASHTO interim guide was revised in 1986 and the concept of resilient modulus was introduced to characterize the resilient behavior of pavement structure. However difficulties have been encountered for obtaining resilient modulus in a proper manner in accordance with circumstance in Korea. In this study, the characteristics of resilient moduli of subbase materials. which are commonly used in Korea. were studied. Based on domestic highway section data, the typical value for the sress state within the subbase course was derived theoretically. The resilient modulus at this stress state was obtained to form a basis for estimation of layer coefficient for pavement design.
