INTER-COMPARISON OF SEVIRI/MSG AND MERIS/ENVISAT BIOPHYSICAL PRODUCTS OVER EUROPE AND AFRICA

The scope of the Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (Land-SAF) is the development and implementation of algorithms, which take full advantage of remotely sensed data from EUMETSAT geostationary (MSG, Meteosat 8-10) and polar orbiting (MetOp series) satellites. The Land-SAF SEVIRI vegetation products include the fractional vegetation cover (FVC), the leaf area index (LAI) and the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR). In this study, the suite of Land-SAF vegetation products is intercompared with MERIS TOAVEG (FVC, LAI and FAPAR) and MERIS MGVI (FAPAR). In order to obtain stable (level 3) products from level 2 instantaneous estimates a temporal compositing process was conducted. A semi-Gaussian filter function was used to enhance the stability of the MERIS products and fill in the gaps due to MERIS observations affected by clouds and temporal noise. MERIS products over Europe and Africa over a two year period (2006–2007), with a frequency of production of 8 days were thus obtained. MERIS vegetation fields were then compared against Land-SAF vegetation products for the same period. MODIS collection 5 LAI recently released products has been used as a reference. Results have shown that Land-SAF and MERIS vegetation products are generally consistent spatially and temporally.
