A new perspective for smart distribution grid planning

The requirement to integrate distributed generation (DG) units, communication technologies, energy storages and controllable loads into the grid is changing the mode of grid operation. Distribution system operators still apply a traditional approach for planning distribution grids to increase the grid capacity. This paper presents a developed framework which combines multiple interrelated approaches essential for planning distribution grids to cope with new changes in the distribution grid and increase grid capacity. The implication to capture the stochastic nature of the renewable generation and loads as an important planning aspect is shown. An improved algorithm is developed to coordinate voltage control among smart grid technologies using sensitivity analysis and determination of the effective numbers of DG units for coordinated voltage control based on feeder impedance. The final results outline the guidelines to be incorporated into distribution system planning in order to guide the evolution of the new system.
