CENTER FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

With a terrain that ranges from the highest mountains to the lowest deserts, from salt marshes to beaches, from sierra to plateau, the natural environment that challenges the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is vast. Thus the department must deal with a vast diversity of storm-water management scenarios. As a consequence, Caltrans’ experience serves as a model for the rest of the United States of how storm-water systems—and problems—can best be managed. In 1997 Caltrans created a storm-water task force to monitor and enforce storm-water management policies and to train and educate Caltrans employees and contractors about proper storm-water pollution measures. Consisting of representatives from private-sector consulting firms, university experts, and Caltrans staff, the task force has as its goal the creation of a culture of storm-water management awareness in the shortest time frame possible.
