Seismic risk assessment for structures with the Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract A systematic study is presented of random factors involved in risk assessment for structures subjected to strong seismic actions. Various aspects of the randomization of relevant parameters in the numerical simulation procedures are discussed, among them the randomization of maximum accelerations and spectral characteristics of ground motions, and resistance properties of structure. Asymptotic distributions of extremes are applied to obtain more reliable estimates of the seismic risk in the area of rare events in the presence of multiple restrictions on the dynamic response of a structure.
