Effects of Pre-sowing Treatments and Sowing Depths on Germination of Rain tree ( Albizia saman ) : A Step towards Conservation of Albizia

The study was carried out in Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna, to investigate means of enhancing the germination of Albizia saman seeds which has a very low germination rate under normal conditions and also to draw steps to be taken from the findings towards conservation. The experiment on the effect of temperatures of water (27, 50, 73 and 96C) and sowing depths (1, 2, 3 and 4cm) was combined in 4x4 factorial experimental designs. A 3x3 factorial design was employed in combining the effect of sulphuric acid treatment durations (10, 30 and 60 minutes) and volumes of acid (20, 30 and 50ml) on the germination of A. saman seeds in second experiment. Germination percentages of seeds soaked in 27, 50, 73 and 96C water ranged between 32.71-45.46%. Highest germination percentage value of 45.46% was recorded for seeds treated in 96C water. The result of interactive effect of water temperatures and sowing depths on the germination of A. saman seeds ranged between 31.11-50.77%. Highest germination percentage value of 50.77% was recorded for seeds treated in 96C water and planted in 1cm sowing depth. Germination percentages of seeds treated for 10, 30 and60 minutes ranged between 65.88-71.56%. Highest germination percentage value of 71.56% was recorded for seeds treated for 30 minutes. Germination percentages of seeds treated for 10, 30 and 60 minutes and soaked in 20, 30 and 60ml of acid ranged between 63.44-90%. Highest germination percentage value of 90% was recorded for seeds treated for 30 minutes in 20ml of acid. The research therefore recommends soaking of A. saman seeds for 30 minutes in 20ml of acid for mass production of its seedlings for conservation in agro-forestry systems.
