Is multimedia always the solution for human-machine interfaces? - a case study in the service & maintenance domain

Today multimedia is often mentioned as a panacea to design an intuitive user interface. But - depending on the device and the context of use - multimedia can be a misapplication. This paper describes a case study of a context of use analysis as a basis for the user-centered development of a user interface for service and maintenance technicians. Beside the classic user interface questions the use of a speech user interface was evaluated.
