A 112Gb/s 4-PAM Transceiver Chipset in 0.18µm SiGe BiCMOS Technology for Optical Communication Systems

This paper describes the design, implementation and the first real-time optical link demonstration of a 112Gb/s (56GBaud) 4-PAM transceiver chipset in 0.18μm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The transmitter IC is capable of generating 4-PAM signals as large as 3.5Vpp differential and up to 128Gb/s. The transmitter also employs feed-forward equalization with digitally adjustable coefficients. The receiver IC employs a full baud-rate clock and data recovery system and an internal PLL to assist lock acquisition. The transceiver chipset operates from a single 3.3V power supply and consumes 8W in total. By using this chipset, a 112-Gbit/s, 4-PAM transmission over 2-km of single-mode fiber is experimentally demonstrated.
