Ocean surface waves

This is the first of three chapters that investigate what satellite remote-sensing data can tell us about dynamical processes and phenomena occurring at the air–sea interface. The subject here is the high-frequency oscillatory motion of the sea surface which we experience as ocean surface waves. Subsequently Chapter 9shows how the distribution of the wind field over the ocean is observed by remote-sensing measurements of sea surface roughness, and Chapter 10 examines what we can learn from satellite data about the fluxes of momentum, heat, and gases between the liquid ocean and the gaseous atmosphere.
