Preliminary design of super long suspension bridges using the temporary additional mass method against a storm

Abstract This is a structural method to increase the aerodynamic stability by adding a mass temporarily into the box girder of a suspension bridge against a storm. First of all, studies were conducted to determine the most effective longitudinal position for such a mass to improve the aerodynamic stability. Roughly designed suspension bridges were accomplished by this method. This method shows the same effect as other structural methods, and reduces much structural material in comparison with the conventional design method. The characteristics of this method is a simple operation to increase the aerodynamic stability. For this study, the extended Bleich theory and a numerical integration method were used.
