Rib shape effects on heat transfer performance in internal cooling passages

© 2015 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Numerical studies of the flow field and heat transfer in a fully developed ribbed channel have been performed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Validation of the LES against measurements shows encouraging agreement. Different rib shapes are investigated aiming to improve the heat transfer rate and reduce the total pressure loss, i.e., square, perforated, triangular with increasing height in the flow direction, triangular with decreasing height in the flow direction, and a semicircular and arc profile. The performance of the various ribs are investigated at a Reynolds number of 14,200. The triangular rib with increasing height in the flow direction is found to provide the best thermal performance, giving approximately 5% greater heat transfer than the basic square profile. An immersed boundary method (IBM) has been implemented for use with LES for complex rigid geometries. To illustrate the capability of the IBM, the benchmark case flow past a cylinder has been applied.
