Personal Hazard Warning System for Enhanced Safety of Vulnerable Road Users

This paper proposes a systems concept and integrated solution to keep the motorized traffic up-to-date with location based and general information about accident risk spots and hazards in an urban or inter-urban street network. The use of geo-referenced data acquisition, analysis, broadcast and satellite based positioning enables the design and implementation of new mobile traffic information services that are intended to contribute to an enhanced traffic safety of elderly and vulnerable road users. As a fact, traffic users who are not familiar with the local traffic network have in general more difficulties to recognize and concentrate on warning signs at the roadside. Especially, if traffic signs are missed and ignored and therefore accident hazard spots are not noticed by the driver, additional alerts are required to raise the driver's attention to the indicated hazard spot. The in-vehicle system equipment consists of multifunctional electronic devices available in the consumer market.
