Transport critical currents

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on how to transport critical currents. For high-T c superconductors (HTS), transport current measurements are important as technological usage becomes nearer, particularly in power engineering applications such as superconducting magnets and machines. Therefore emphasis is given to measurements on significantly sized conductors that incorporate bulk material, involving currents perhaps up to hundreds of amperes and certainly tens of amps. High-T c bulk materials are of great interest, as their upper critical fields (B c2 ) are known to be very high at low temperatures, and insert coils have been built that have added incremental fields to backgrounds to give total fields in excess of 23 tesla. Such high fields would not be possible for low-temperature superconductors (LTS), with the exception of Chevrel-phase materials (which have still to be developed). For this reason measurements at low temperatures (in the liquid helium regime) and in high magnetic fields will feature strongly.
